The Discovery Project is underway!
Published Monday, 14 December 2020

Exciting things are happening as we make a start on the delivery phase of the Discovery Project.

Over the coming winter months the Operations Team begin work on restoring the original vistas that were intended when Christopher Spurrier built Upton House in 1816. They will be removing the invasive tree species that prevent some of our oldest and original trees from flourishing, opening up views from the House to the shoreline and out across Holes Bay.

Once this work has been completed the Team will move on to managing and restoring the original Georgian Pleasure grounds.

More information on the specific work, reasons and benefits of this phase of the project can be found at the Discovery Project ‘What’s Happening?‘ page.

Meet Jennie

Jennie is our new Community Engagement and Learning Officer. She will be out and about, in the Country Park and beyond, talking to visitors and the local community about how the Discovery Project presents opportunities to engage with the heritage of the estate and the new learning & activity programmes we have planned.

If you see her about do say hello!

Jennie and the team will be starting to utilise the wide and wonderful knowledge of our visitors and community as we research the history of the estate and its families, and the natural habitats and range of wildlife that can be found in the Country Park. This information will inform how we work with the public and conserve our landscape for the future.

Would you like to get involved?

We are looking for Interpretation & Research Volunteers to help gather memories about the estate or record and monitor the natural environment.

Or perhaps you’d prefer to assist with our exciting new learning programmes as an Engagement & Learning Volunteer? We will be creating workshops for lots of different areas of our community and need the help of energetic volunteers to help deliver them.

If you enjoy getting hands-on, our popular Garden & Practical Conservation groups are always keen to recruit if you’d like to help with the maintenance of the beautiful Country Park, learning new skills and meeting new people.

Further information for all those interested in volunteering at our Get Involved page.

The Path of Life

The Path of Life is making its way along the Walled Garden Borders as we continue to raise funds towards the Discovery Project; we have a match funding target of £30,000 which will allow us to receive the full £1.9 million from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Why not leave your own mark in the park or gift a brick to a loved one this Christmas?

Find out how you can add your brick to the Path of Life and the other ways to support our fundraising efforts
