Green Flag Awards 2022, celebrated at Coy Pond

Councillor Andy Hadley celebrates with some of our many volunteers, Friends of Upton Country Park, and Upton Country Park team.

Here at Upton Country Park we are celebrating after receiving a coveted Green Flag Award, the international quality mark for parks and green spaces.

Across the BCP area parks and green spaces play a vital role for people as a place to relax, exercise, and meet friends and family safely, achieving the Green Flag Award highlights the hard work and dedication of the teams that make the green space a great space for everyone to visit and enjoy.

We also also retained our Green Heritage Site Accreditation, supported by Historic England, for the management of our historic features. The judges said of Upton Country Park “Just continue with the work you are doing as your site is an example to all on how to manage and develop a heritage site for the future.”

Councillor Andy Hadley, Portfolio Holder for Climate Mitigation, Environment and Energy, said:

“It’s great news that Upton Country Park and Poole Park have once again achieved the Green Flag Award and Green Heritage Site Accreditation. These awards are a clear signal to residents and visitors of the commitment and hard work of the teams managing and maintaining these important local sites. I’d also like to take the opportunity to say thank you to the hard-working volunteers who contribute their free time to get involved in supporting their local Park, from litter picking and keeping paths clear, to maintaining flower beds and supporting our visitor centres and events.

“As a council, we recognise that clean, well maintained, and accessible green spaces are key to our residents physical and mental health and wellbeing. We are committed to continuing this wonderful work and enhancing our natural environment and preserving it for generations to come.”

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
